Coming soon..... more information and details...... but for now - the basics:
What's the value of .....
It all depends on two factors: condition and desire. First thing you should do is find out what it is that you have. There are several guide books and web sites to help you determine what the condition is. Desire is based on two things: first, how much desire and effort you are willing to put in selling and second is how much desire the buyer posseses and is then willing to offer.
Determining the value is another story... Just because something is old or rare does not always mean it is valuable. There is a significant difference between what you 'think' it is should be worth and what someone else may be willing to pay! Sentimental value is just that, there is no dollar amount that you can place on fond memories. Kind of like the credit card commercial... "priceless". Sometimes this is where a friend or experienced person comes in to offer a friendly 'reality check".
Guide books are great as a reference but their values noted are out dated the moment they are printed. They will help bring you fairly close as to what you may have, determine a general value range and pinpoint a condition. Online auction sites are only as good as your description is and the number of visitors to your auction page are willing to pay at that particular moment. Just because an item similar to yours went for a premium price today does not guarantee yours will also tomorrow. There are numerous factors that can go into these sorts of events.
If you would like, contact us and we will be happy to help point you in the right direction. While we are not 'experts', many of our members have experience and are more than willing to assist you.
I have some trains but they won't run.....
Funny thing is, we say the same thing sometimes! Numerous things can cause our little machines to not work as well as they should. Sometimes it is something fairly simple, sometimes not....
The first step is to look up your item on the manufacturers web site for instructions. Many times there are known issues that can be found in some basic research.
There are many web sites and model railroad chat groups/ online forums that also go into repair and maintenance of model trains. As we continue to build this page we'll add them in here.
Many of our work sessions and clinics are devoted to repair and maintenance of model train equipment so check our web page calendar of events or sign up for our email notices.
During open house events we 'might' have a moment to take a quick look at your equipment and offer you some sound advice.
If you would like, contact us as shown on the contact us page and we will be happy to help point you in the right direction. While we are not 'experts', many of our members have experience and are more than willing to assist.
